Stephen Ministry

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest
Matthew 11:28

Stephen Ministry is an international ministry that was developed specifically for expanding the care that churches can provide to the congregation. When a church enrolls in Stephen Ministry, they are provided the training tools that enhance the spiritual gifts of those called and the framework to supervise the Stephen Ministers in Christian Caregiving. This type of lay ministry follows the teaching of Christ as he taught his followers to care for others. Stephen Ministers are trained to respond to the requests for care of individuals who are in need or in crisis. You do not need to be a member of the church to request a Stephen Minister.

Stephen Ministers ARE lay caregivers from our church who:

  • have completed 50 hrs. of intense training
  • can provide one-to-one Christ centered care
  • are trustworthy confidant – one who will keep everything said confidential, even your identity
  • are committed to focus on your needs
  • can provide encouragement
  • are non-judgmental
  • are ready to meet for an hour once a week for as long as the need is there
  • are ready to pray with you when you are ready

A Stephen Minister is NOT:

  • A counselor or therapist;
  • A problem solver;
  • Someone who runs errands or helps with chores; or
  • A casual visitor

Everyone goes through difficult times, but there are times when it is more than you can deal with. God does not intend on any of us going through crisis situations by ourselves. Are you, or do you know someone who might be struggling with a situation? A few of these situations may be, but are not limited to:

  • Grieving the death of a loved one
  • Hospitalized or recovering from hospitalization
  • Lonely or discouraged
  • Unemployed or in a job crisis
  • Disabled or caring for an ill, aging or disabled family member
  • Moving or relocating
  • New to the congregation or the community
  • Facing a life transition
  • Victims of a disaster or accident

To receive the care of a Stephen Minister for yourself or someone you know, (friend, relative, co-worker, neighbor, etc.) who is in need, obtain the persons permission first, then contact the church office by calling (804)739-3459 or a Stephen Leader who processes referrals.

The Stephen Leaders are: Terri Woods – (804) 317-4519 or Susan Seamster (804) 516-1935.
